Ray Suen is a musician and composer based in Los Angeles. Classically trained as a violinist in San Diego, California he was a principal player with the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra while studying at the University of California, San Diego. Suen embarked on his first national tour performing with the glam rock outfit Louis XIV in 2007. He would go on to play guitars and keyboards for Las Vegas rock band The Killers as well as harp and theremin for Oklahoma psych rockers The Flaming Lips. Suen was also a member of English-language, Latin rock band Mariachi El Bronx contributing songs to their last two studio albums. Suen has also performed and recorded with many other acts including Jarryd James, The Breeders, Kamasi Washington, and Devon Sproule. He has also been featured as a pedal steel and electric guitarist with Mickey Guyton, performing with her at the 2021 Grammy Awards Ceremony and the American Music Awards. He has been a member of the Childish Gambino band since 2011 and in 2015 joined Passion Pit as an auxiliary member playing guitar and synths. In 2017, he became the Musical Director for New Zealand pop artist, Lorde, for her Melodrama and Solar Power tours. In 2024, he began touring with art rock outfit Vampire Weekend playing violin, guitar, pedal steel and keys in support of their album “Only God Was Above Us.”
His first feature film score for The Thicket, a dark western thriller directed by Elliott Lester, will be released September 6, 2024 by Tubi and Samuel Goldwyn Films.
